About the Author
Throughout his career, Dwight L. Wilson is a Quaker who has held many jobs: educator, administrator, religious leader. In each role, he worked to advance equality, opportunity and understanding. He continues this work in his carefully researched historical fiction series Esi Was My Mother, which follows the lives of an enslaved black family from 18th century Africa to the American Civil War. He strives to portray triumphant examples of black stories that will make history come alive for readers. He is also author of two short story collections, The Kidnapped and The Resistors as well as a memoir centered on caring for children, Whispering to Babies and two psalms books: Modern Psalms In Search of Peace and Justice and Modern Psalms of Solace and Resistance.
Dwight is married to Diane Lehman Wilson, an attorney and educator, and he has four biological children and three step-children. In addition to being a professional writer and speaker Dwight is an ten year volunteer on Monday mornings where he cuddles babies on the Mott Hospital Children's Pediatric Ward, volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a former Ann Arbor Human Rights Commissioner, Trustee for the Student Advocacy Center, and an active participant in the Interfaith Round Table of Washtenaw County from which he retired a Co-Director. Dwight’s commitment to increasing equality and supporting underserved populations and children is demonstrated by his tenure as Headmaster at the Friends School in Detroit, Presidency at the Independent Teaching Project, Founding CEO of SEEDS in New Jersey, and service in several other reputable teaching institutions. Dwight’s interests include serving others, responsible, gun control, anti-domestic abuse, jazz, and genealogy. He earned his Master of Divinity in counseling and theology at Bangor Theological Seminary and his B.A. in history and sociology at Bowdoin College was magna cum laude.
